The Highlight of My Day(s) By Laura

The amount of highlighters I own is getting a bit out of hand; I’m pretty sure when I open my makeup drawer, they can see me from space. Like most girls, I am always striving for that “youthful-glow” without appearing like I just got smacked in the face with a disco ball. So, without further ado, here are the highlighters (the good and the bad) that I have purchased over the years.

1. Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer

One of the first highlighters I ever purchased was Hard Candy’s So Baked Bronzer in Tiki. I had originally wanted The Balm’s Mary Lou Manizer, but couldn’t justify spending $30 on it. I had heard that Tiki was an excellent dupe, so I went to Walmart and grabbed it. This product is really great for light to medium skin (even though it is technically a bronzer). It goes on very nicely and adds a really nice highlight. I was worried that it would be too sparkly since it is a cheaper product, but it’s not at all. It just adds a really nice sheen to the skin.

2. The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer

After using Hard Candy’s Tiki for a year (and loving it) I decided to buy the original product that I had wanted: The Balm’s Mary Lou Manizer. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. While it is a great product, I didn’t find it all that much better than Tiki. That being said, it is a lot more pigmented than Tiki, and also goes on the skin smoother. But, if you don’t have the luxury of spending over $30 on this, I would just go with the dupe.

3. Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips in Vegas Strip

I have been using this product since I was 16 years old. I absolutely love it! I originally used this as an eyeshadow only, but over the years I have broadened my horizons and used it as a highlight/bronzer . I really like that I am able to use it when I have my pasty-white-winter-time-skin, or when I am a bronzed goddess in the summer (I’m actually probably only 2 shades darker..). The product has 5 strips of colour, ranging from a light gold all the way to a dark bronze. You can either use the colours individually, or you can get really crazy and swirl them all together.

4. MAC Cream Colour Base in Pearl

This is another product that I have owned for a long time. It is a very cool tone, so if you have darker skin, I wouldn’t suggest buying this one. It isn’t sparkly at all, which is what I love most about it. It is really great on the cheek, the cupid’s bow, or on the inner corner of the eye. Because it is a cream, it’s really great at creating a dewy effect.

5. Almay Pure Blends Eyeshadow in Petal

I know, I know, this isn’t technically a highlight, but just hear me out. I picked up this eyeshadow in a clearance bin and when I got home I realized I would never use it on my eyes. Upon further inspection, I realized it would look really nice as a rosy highlight. I’ve included this in my review for those of you who haven’t thought to use an eyeshadow as a highlight. They can sometimes be a much cheaper alternative, and work just as great.

6. BeneFit Sun Beam

I’m pretty sure this is considered a bronzer, but since I consider anything with a shimmer to be a highlight… we’re just gonna go with it. This highlight is a liquid consistency, and is suitable for darker skin tones. It gives SUCH a nice glow to the skin. I can’t look at it without thinking of summertime. It looks amazing with BeneFit’s Coralista blush.

7. BeneFit Watt’s Up

This is probably my favourite highlighter that I own. It just goes on the skin so beautifully and creates such a natural glow. It instantly brightens up my complexion every time I use it. The colour is champagne, and is suitable for all skin tones. I really recommend making sure it is properly blended out (I failed to do this once and looked like the Tin Man). It is pretty pricey, but I was able to find a sample size on eBay for about $12.

8. Elf’s All Over Colour Stick in Lilac Petal

Last (and certainly most least) is Elf’s All Over Colour Stick. I can’t say I was really mad about this product not being great since it was so cheap. The product goes on very…metallic. I didn’t notice anything “lilac” about it. It’s more like a silvery pink. I used this product once and ended up washing it off my face.

  1. Thanks for this post–it’s helpful to see a comparison of so many highlighters at once. I’ve been wanting to try mary-lou manizer because of its reviews. I already have benefit’s benetint and watt’s up, though. Maybe i’ll stick with what i’ve got.

  2. Oops, i meant high beam, not benetint!
